Building upon past AWBW community art initiatives, this new project continues to celebrate a collective energy and commitment to transform trauma through art. Our lead collaborating artist for this initiative is artist and Director of Substance Abuse Services at Homeboy Industries Fabian Debora.
At the Core: Transforming Trauma Together represents our innermost selves, and the hearts of our communities, coming together to use art to transform trauma. It addresses core wounds, core values, core needs, and allows us to pull back the layers to reveal what is at our centers, fostering more lasting individual and community transformation to occur.
This project is a way for individuals to reclaim their voices and true identities, to find a place of inclusion, and to begin a personal transformation that will ripple into their families and communities. The central component of At the Core is a mural created by participants at 11 agencies throughout Los Angeles County, however its reach extends far beyond this pilot cohort.
We invite you, the community at large, to get involved in a variety of ways:
Attend Interactive Exhibition: Opening Reception June 11
The collaborative mural created by the pilot cohort will be on display at San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center June 11-24. Join us for the Opening Reception on Sunday, June 11 to view the mural, contribute to a community art piece, create touchstones and hear the stories of participants impacted by violence and trauma from across LA County. There will also be additional programming throughout the duration of the exhibition.
Host an Exhibition and Hands-on Art Making Workshop
Create artwork, including touchstones, with your community using an “At the Core” mural as inspiration for transforming trauma together. Email AtTheCore@awbw.org for more information.
Create your own "At the Core" Touchstones
We encourage you to innovate the use of touchstones as a way to connect deeply to yourself and each other in the face of challenges. Through creating At the Core touchstones, and carrying these small pieces of art throughout our life journeys, they become catalysts for healing and positive change.
Download a PDF with a few examples of how touchstones have provided a safe way for difficult conversations and profound connection to occur. You can also download the general Touchstones Toolkit for more details about creating touchstones.
