I CAN WE CAN at Gallery Neuartig

About this Exhibition

The I CAN WE CAN community engaged installation launched April 1 – May 5, 2013 at the Gallery Neuartig located in the San Pedro arts district. A Window Between Worlds designed this socially engaged art project in collaboration with lead artist Neda Moridpour, postgraduate artist in residence from Otis College of Art and Design’s MFA Public Practice Program. Conceived as an ongoing art project in conjunction with more than 400 participants throughout Los Angeles, the installation employed motion activated audios and mirrors to actively engage viewers and included voices and text in 6 languages (English, Spanish, Korean, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Farsi) It also included a 400-page book of I CAN WE CAN pledge to end the violence hands created by participating shelters and community members. This pilot exhibition enabled our collaborating shelter partners to explore socially engaged art, and experiment with the integration of new technologies and non-traditional venues to engage and mobilize participation of the greater community.

"I was born and raised in Iran and I developed a strong awareness for gender discrimination, violence, inequality, and censorship. My goal is to collaboratively echo survivors' voices in solidarity, raise awareness about violence and sexual abuse, highlight the role of art in the movement against violence, and create an alternative space inside the gallery for critical conversations about this subject."
