The Journey Markers Exhibit

Themed "A Journey of Survival," this exhibit of Journey Marker Banners spotlights the power, the strength, and the soul it takes to journey through and ultimately overcome the effects of the cycle of domestic violence.  In its original form, a Journey Marker is similar in size and shape to a bookmark.  Each piece is a personal reminder of strength and hope for every survivor to carry with her, marking her place in her journey.

Over 100 Journey Markers were received from across the nation as well as internationally.  For the exhibit, 25 Journey Markers were enlarged onto canvas banners.  At 17" X 44" (5.2 square feet), each broadcasts its message clearly for all to see.  The survivor's own words are written on the bottom of each banner, further strengthening her message.

The Journey Markers debut exhibition was held at the U.S. Senate Building Rotunda in Washington D.C. where it launched Domestic Violence Awareness Month, 1998.

In the words of Donna Shalala, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, who spoke at the reception, "This project should rock our world... It opens the window to the power of the human spirit, and to the immense fortitude of all the survivors who have recovered their lives and their souls through art...  I can't think of a better way to raise the awareness-and raise the consciousness-of our country."
