The Journey Markers debut exhibition was held at the U.S. Senate Building Rotunda in Washington D.C to launch Domestic Violence month in October, 1998.
In the words of Donna Shalala, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services in 1998: "This project opens the window to the power of the human spirit, and to the immense fortitude of all the survivors who have recovered their lives and their souls through art."
In its original form, a Journey Marker is similar to a bookmark and serves as a personal reminder of strength and hope for every survivor to carry with her, marking her place in her journey. For the Senate exhibit, 25 Journey Markers were enlarged onto canvas banners to broadcast their messages for all to see.
