"Take a Walk in My Shoes" tells the stories of members of the Dawson County Domestic Violence women's support group in Glendive, Montana.
Many women are not able to talk about domestic abuse and the profound effect it has had on them. This project has been a safe way for some of them to deal with these experiences, domestic abuse advocate Kelly Mumper explained.
The women began designing their shoes and writing their stories in July or August as part of the support group activities. Some were hesitant at first, but once they started on the project, they became really excited about it, she said.
Each woman brought in a shoe and decorated it to tell her story. Working on the shoes brought out many emotions - anger, numbness, fear, grief, sadness. Sometimes they even laughed as they worked. Sometimes they cried. Many experienced a real sense of healing, she said.
Thirteen women participated in the project. Their shoes were on display throughout October at two Glendive locations, and also in neighboring towns Wibaux, Terry, and Richey.
The project was adapted by support group facilitators Mumper and Lora Knowles from a project originally created by AWBW art leader Judy Van Brodjesky in Wausau, Wisconsin.
