Rising

The Ticket, by Jai Lee Wong
"My mother made a hard decision to re-start her life - for the benefit of herself and her three kids. This decision meant that she did not see her kids for six years. She came to the US as a live-in babysitter in exchange for a Green Card: her ticket to freedom from domestic violence and a new beginning for her three children. Divorce was uncommon in Korea back then. Rather than suffer in silence, my mother fought for a new life. Her story is a story of hundreds and thousands of immigrants in this country. And I, a daughter of a single immigrant mother, draw my strength and determination for a just and equal society from her."

This exhibition features art by Asian survivors of violence, and includes each artist’s words in her own language, including Chinese, Japanese, Punjabi, Urdu, Indonesian, Bangla, Thai, Tagalog, Korean, Hindi, and Gujarati. Rising out of the pain of abuse is the strength and dignity of each woman who tells her story. This exhibit was created to help strengthen the voices of Asian and Pacific Islander domestic violence survivors, to share common experiences and to break the shame and isolation so often felt by survivors of violence.
